Rural Livelihood Development Success Story — Jay Durga SHG Success Story

5 tribal women from The Jay Durga SHG, Mohali village, Dhanora block, Gadchiroli district underwent a 20 hour training on Piggery from November 11 to 13, 2020. During the on — site training, they repaired an old shelter to be used as a pig sty and were handed over 4 sows and 1 boar aged 6 months on November 22, 2020.

They collected waste food and vegetables from the boys and girls ashram shallas/schools and weekly markets; and connected with the local government veterinary doctor for vaccination.

Subsequently, the 4 sows delivered at various months — a total of 19 piglets, of which 15 piglets survived.

Pork is relished by adivasis in Central India. They cook pork for all festive occasions, and pork meat is sold by kilograms at weekly markets. When 3 piglets attained a weight of 50 kgs each, they were sold at weekly markets, and the SHG earned Rs 18,000.00.

During the COVID pandemic, with schools closed, the women went house to house to collect waste food and vegetable to feed their stock.

Currently two sows are pregnant, and the 15 piglets aged 3 months are suckling two mothers.Once weaned in the coming month, the two sows will get pregnant again, and 4 sow piglets will be handed over to 4 new piggery entrepreneurs.

The value of the current live stock of Jay Durga SHG is Rs 152,000.00.
